Word Search Puzzles - They are a smart way to build
vocabulary and spelling
Word Search Puzzles
Similar to crossword puzzles, word searches are very
suitable puzzles for kids of all ages - big "kids" too. On a plane
or bus ride you are almost sure to find someone doing miles of these
puzzles.
A word search puzzle is not just a way of passing time.
Smart kids can use word searches to pass tests.
Reinforce Spelling and Word Recognition with Word Search Puzzles
If a kid is having problems with spelling or reading,
this is a sure way to reinforce the proper spelling of words. The very act
of tracing those words letter by letter is a good way to learn and be
familiar with the spelling of the word.
Teachers know this and that's why word searches are given
not only in language class, but in almost every subject.
Marking Found - Don't Annoy Me!
If we ever do a word search puzzle together, please don't
use a loop to envelop each word you find. It annoys me. It's a waste of
time.
Just draw a line through the thing... I mean, the word. A
straight line, a crooked line, a zig-zag line - don't care. Drawing lines
through the word search items if neat too.
When all those loops start looking like spaghetti, I am
distracted - especially if the puzzle is large. So use a line, OK? Now...
Where to find Word Search Puzzles
If you go to
John's
Word Search Puzzles page you'll find a long list of puzzles from A to Z.
They are not difficult. Any kid who can read at 2nd or 3rd grade level can
do these on their own.
Thanks John for these great word search puzzles. The only
problem I have with John's puzzle presentations is his "proud to be
Microsoft Free" banner at the bottom of the pages. But you don't have to
ever look at that...

Word Search Puzzles - How to create your own
You can create your own word search puzzles for kids and
for adults online at the discovery.com website. The link is given below.
It is almost always true that behind every smart kid,
there is at least one smart parent or guardian.
So if you are a parent of a smart kid, or if you want
your kid (or kids) to be smart, you will try to maximize their academic
learning all the time. So get involved with a word search.
Here's an idea. Let's say your kid has problems with
spelling. In fact, your kid's teacher has sent home a list of spelling words
and Friday is the spelling test. Can you create a word search puzzle with
those spelling words in five to ten minutes and help that kid ace that
spelling test?
Yes. Here is the link to the word search puzzle maker at the site. It is
http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/.
The picture above shows you how to access the word search creator page from
the pull-down menu.
Go help that kid 'ace' that spelling test and feel like
it's just a kid's game. After all, learning should be fun.
